Harvard, Beth Israel Will Settle Charges

BOSTON -- Harvard University and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a
Harvard teaching hospital, agreed to pay the federal government $2.4 million
to settle allegations that Harvard and the hospital made false claims to the
National Institutes of Health in connection with four federal grants.
The U.S. Attorney's office in Boston said the latest payment is in addition
to $850,000 Harvard agreed to pay in 2002 in connection with the same
allegations, which involved grants for research on aging conducted through
Harvard Medical School.
Among other improprieties, federal prosecutors said the university and the
hospital overstated information on related budgets and billed the government
for salaries, goods and equipment that were either used on unrelated
projects or ineligible for reimbursement.
Spokesmen for both Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel said their
institutions had disclosed the problems to the government and cooperated
with its investigation.
