Duties & Responsibilities: The Director of IRB Operations is responsible for coordination of the review process for human subjects research proposals submitted to the Committee on the Use of Human Subjects (CUHS), which is the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for the University Area schools.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. This position fosters the ethical conduct of human subjects research and CUHS and investigator compliance with federal and state laws and regulations, and University policies, through a variety of avenues, including education, training, quality assurance and quality improvement activities.
2. The Director of IRB Operations supervises CUHS staff including research officers and protocol coordinator, coordinating workflow and managing the development, refinement, and implementation of office policies and procedures.
3. This is a "working manager" role that includes responsibility for protocol review and approval and regular interaction with investigators.
4. The position facilitates collaborations with other offices and entities across the University (academic departments in FAS and in other schools, Research Administration offices in schools served by CUHS, the Office for Sponsored Programs, the office of the Provost, and IRBs at the School of Public Health and the Medical School ).
5. Shared responsibilities include budget preparation and monitoring, departmental reports, personnel actions, and other duties as required, including noncompliance cases.
6. The Director will serve on FAS and University committees related to the University Human Research Protection Program (HRPP), including accreditation, researcher education, and other initiatives.
Basic Qualifications: Bachelor's degree required. Minimum 3-5 years experience in IRB administration, including thorough knowledge of human subjects regulations and elements of protocol review. Prior supervisory experience essential.
Additional Qualifications: Advanced degree preferred. IRB experience is preferably in social/behavioral/educational research environment. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including ability to digest and present complex material clearly and succinctly. Ability to work with investigators and research and administrative staff at all levels, often under deadline pressure. Familiarity with electronic protocol systems preferred. Familiarity with FileMaker Pro very helpful.
