The primary mission of the Office of Research is to foster an environment of innovation and efficiency that serves the University of Michigan Medical School (UMMS) research community and supports biomedical science from insight to impact. To that end, our team is constantly striving to enhance the research enterprise, including maintaining an investigator-focused infrastructure, facilitating and diversifying investigators' avenues for funding, streamlining research processes.
The University of Michigan Medical School is seeking an experienced, administrative professional to serve as the Director, Institutional Review Board of the Medical School (IRBMED). The Director, reporting to the Medical School’s Senior Director for Research, is responsible for the overall leadership and management of the oversight programs for the protection of human subjects in research at the Medical School and Hospitals and Health Centers, while fostering an environment of administrative support and service to the research community. The IRBMED Director plays a key role in representing the Medical School and UM-Health System components of the University-wide Human Subjects Protections Program, especially for FDA-regulated research, clinical trials, and translational research.
The Director ensures that human subjects research is reviewed, approved and conducted in accordance with appropriate international, federal or state regulations and guidance, with funding agency specific guidelines, with institutional policies, and with appropriate accreditation standards. S/he is responsible for maintaining efficient and compliant processes for the review, approval and oversight of human subjects research performed by the five Institutional Review Boards for the approximately 3600 projects conducted in the Medical School and Hospitals and Health Centers. The Director manages the IRBMED regulatory and office staff totaling 27 FTEs and provides assistance and guidance to researchers on campus. S/he is responsible for the development of IRBMED training programs for faculty, students and staff conducting human subjects research. In addition, the Director will represent the Medical School IRBs within the school and across campus serving as a key member on committees, task forces, and councils relating to human subjects research.
Experience and Key Qualifications:
• Background with educational experience generally associated with a Master’s degree or equivalent years of work experience. Certification for Institutional Review Board Professionals (CIP) desirable or attainment of certification within one year of eligibility.
• At least 10 years experience related to research or research administration in a university setting.
• An expert understanding of ethical principles, federal regulations, agency guidelines, and nationally accepted standards for human subjects protection; as well as other agency-specific requirements and familiarity with typical University contracts and agreements relating to the IRB.
• Strong commitment to the ethical principles underlying the rights and welfare of research subjects.
• Experience in assisting with the AAHRPP accreditation process.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Effective management and interpersonal skills, including budget preparation and management, personnel management, demonstrated ability to hire and train new staff and an ability to motivate and retain professional staff. Five or more years of supervisory experience required, preferably within an academic medicine environment.
• Database, web-based submission and/or training program development experience preferred.
• Ability to manage a sensitive and/or confidential data environment.
• Ability to use astute judgment, think strategically, analyze logically, and cogently and persuasively present summaries and recommendations.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team.
