Director, Institutional Review Board
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign



The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for the position of Director, Institutional Review Board. The Director is responsible for the overall leadership and management of the Urbana-Champaign campus oversight programs for the protection of human subjects in research, while fostering an environment of administrative support and service to the University research community.

The Director ensures that human subjects research is reviewed, approved and conducted in accordance with appropriate international, federal or state regulations and guidance, with funding agency specific guidelines, with institutional policies, and with appropriate accreditation standards. S/he is responsible for maintaining efficient and compliant processes for the review, approval and oversight of human subjects research performed by the Institutional Review Boards (IRBs). The Director manages IRB office staff and provides assistance and guidance to researchers on campus. S/he is responsible for the development of required campus training programs for faculty, students and staff conducting human subjects research.


Experience and Key Qualifications:

* Master's degree required, preferably in a relevant discipline (psychology, education, social work, etc.) and/or equivalent professional certification (e.g. nurse practitioner, LCSW) required; doctorate degree and/or equivalent professional certification (e.g., Ed. D.) preferred. Certification for Institutional Review Board Professionals (CIP) desirable.

* An understanding of federal regulations and agency guidelines for human subjects as well as other agency specific regulations, and familiarity with typical University contracts and agreements relating to the IRB.

* At least 10 years experience related to research or research administration in a university setting

* Effective management skills, including budget preparation and management, personnel management, demonstrated ability to hire and train new staff and an ability to motivate and retain professional staff.

* Experience in managing an accreditation process.

* Database, web-based submission and/or training program development experience a plus.

* Ability to manage a sensitive and/or confidential data environment.
