 Assistant IRB Director -- Newark, NJ

Responsibilities: Responsible for the operational functions of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) on the Newark Campus, servicing all schools, University Hospital (UH) and multiple institutes residing in Newark. Directs operational activities and IRB staff support services for the administration of the function for the protection of human subjects. Assists the IRB Director and act in his/her absence. Provides guidance to departments and individual faculty members to identify and address issues related to their clinical research. Maintains and updates federal assurance documents for changes as necessary and provides documentation to HSPP for submission to federal agencies. Recommends the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting, performance evaluations, transfers and/or disciplining of employees as well as other personnel actions according to University policies and procedures. Attends local and national meetings relevant to the regulatory compliance functions, optimization of the IRB and related clinical research activities under the recommendation of the IRB Director. Conducts routine QA audits of IRB records. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in Science (BS) or equivalent health-related professional degree with a minimum of three (3) years of experience in the administration of Human Subject Protections Program in the biomedical or public health research field. CIM, CIP or equivalent certificate is preferred (may be obtained after hire). Knowledge of state and federal regulations governing the ethical conduct of research and the protection of human subjects. Interpersonal and communications skills with demonstrated ability to work with clinical research faculty, students and administration to assure appropriate levels of education and understanding of the requirements for ethical research with human subjects. Outstanding human relations and leadership skills and the ability to function in a team environment required. Demonstrated knowledge is necessary of how to accomplish superior performance in a unionized environment. Additional related professional experience may be substituted for the degree on a year-for-year basis.
