Job Description/Qualifications:
Assistant Director for Research Compliance
University of North Carolina at Greensboro

Summary: A research intensive institution of higher learning is seeks an Assistant Director for Research Compliance. The Assistant Director will assist in overseeing all aspects of research compliance efforts to ensure compliance with applicable Federal, State, and Institutional requirements. This position was created to centralize the research compliance functions including but not limited to training, and assisting researchers and committee members, and institutional officials across campus.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

•Conduct educational training sessions for faculty, staff, and students in all areas of compliance overseen by the ORC. These sessions will also be conducted for committee members to keep them abreast of current and new regulations and policies.

•Facilitate the ORC campus “Positive Feedback Campaign” which is a structured program to inform the campus about the efforts currently in place to assist researchers in areas of research compliance and promote resources available in the ORC to facilitate and increase research activity.

•Conduct ORC’s Data Safety monitoring program by evaluating a random selection of active research and teaching protocols. This program ensures that protocols remain consistent with their original design.

•Serve as the first reviewer for IRB protocols to ensure accuracy, ethical congruity, compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations and procedures.

•Manage the review of all expedited IRB protocols.

•Assist ORC director by provide insight in revising and updating institutional and office policies and procedures. Oversee document review as outlined in the strategic plan to ensure that all documents are reviewed in an appropriate timeframe.

•Facilitate the ORC Quality Assessment program. This program ensures that the ORC is compliant with institutional and federal mandates including but not limited to data storage and destruction, archival data, management/conduct of internal procedures, and draft potential solutions from outcome.

•Function as a backup to the Director of the ORC to ensure congruity in the Directors absence.

Education:

Requires a Bachelor’s Degree. However, a Masters Degree is strongly preferred. Possession of Certification for Institutional Review Board (IRB) Professionals CIP or equivalent certification is considered a plus. Obtaining a CIP or equivalent certification will be required within the first two years of employment.

Skills:

The successful candidate will have demonstrated independence, knowledge, and proficiency in maintaining comprehensive research compliance programs that provide education, coordination and guidance to units and committees responsible for compliance; be able to independently interpret laws and regulations appropriate to research compliance to ensure the overall protection of human participants and animals used in research; possess effective leadership skills; be able to advice and counsel senior management on matters of general research compliance and ethical human participant research practices; possess excellent written, verbal, and computer skills; have the ability to manage, motivate, and coach researchers and their staff; be experienced with management reporting systems; have a high level of experience and comfort level working independently with senior leadership, faculty, staff, students, and external agencies in complex organizations; and be proficient with computer programs, such as word processors, spreadsheets, and databases .
