Childrens Hospital Los Angeles (www.childrenshospitalla.org) invites applications and nominations in the search to fill the role of Manager, Human Subjects Protection Program. A private, nonprofit teaching hospital, Childrens Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) admits more than 11,000 children annually to the hospital, with almost 50 percent of those admissions being children under four years of age. In 2003, the hospital dedicated The Saban Research Institute (SRI), one of the largest and most productive pediatric research centers in the United States with 100 investigators at work on 251 laboratory studies, clinical trials, and community-based research and health services. SRI received $39 million in extramural funding for biomedical research in 2007, including $32 million from federal sources.

Reporting directly to the Chief Compliance Officer, the Manager, Human Subjects Protection Program is responsible for further establishing, evaluating, and overseeing the administrative operations, policies, and procedures of the Human Subjects Protection Program of the Committee for Clinical Investigations. The Manager also supervises the educational and quality assurance functions of the CCI office. There is one IRB at CHLA whose 25 members meet twice a month to review a slate of protocols from the current 850 open protocols. The Manager is not a member of the IRB, but sits as a member on the Conflict of Interest Committee and the Stem Cell Research Committee.

The successful candidate will have a minimum of two years of research regulatory experience, with three years of full-time IRB experience, and have completed a Master’s degree in a related field. Strong preference will be given to those candidates having earned this experience in an academic medical environment. At least three years management experience with staff supervision is required; five to eight years is preferred. The successful candidate will also possess an in-depth knowledge of federal and state regulations pertaining to human subjects research and protections; strong organizational and interpersonal skills that foster collaborative relationships among the CCI office, the Committee, and the research community; the ability to write complex documents and to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; and a proven track record of providing excellent service in a complex organization. CIP certification is preferred.
