Social and Behavioral Sciences Institutional Review Board
The Social and Behavioral Sciences Institutional Review Board (SBS IRB) of the University of
Chicago is charged with ensuring that non-clinical research involving human participants is
conducted in accordance with federal, state, local and University regulations, laws, and policies,
and ethical principles as part of the University’s human subjects protection program. The SBS
IRB reviews all non-clinical research conducted by faculty, students, and staff of the University
(with the exception of research conducted through the School of Social Service Administration
and the Chapin Hall Center for Children) to protect the rights and welfare of human subjects.
This is a part-time position (up to 19.5 hours per week without benefits) in the SBS IRB office.
This position provides administrative support to the SBS IRB Director and Associate Director,
assisting in the collating, organizing, reviewing, and maintaining of research applications.
Support duties include: pre-screening and assigning incoming IRB submissions to appropriate
administrators/reviewers/review type based on federal guidelines; maintaining flow of
submissions to the IRB office within the online protocol system; communicating with researchers
on any lapsed and/or outstanding research protocols that need to be submitted, renewed, or
revised; coordinating and facilitating the use of the online protocol system by researchers,
including setting up new user accounts and troubleshooting access problems with current users;
answering researchers’ queries regarding human subjects research, federal guidelines, the review
process, and the technical details of the online protocol system; creating annual and semi-annual
reports on IRB office progress.
The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications: bachelor’s degree in any of the
social sciences required (Master’s degree preferred); at least 1 year experience working with a
university IRB preferred; knowledge and familiarity with the Common Rule in Title 45 Code of
Federal Regulations Section 46 preferred; familiarity with several computer software programs
including IRBWise, Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and Mozilla preferred; experience conducting
human subjects research preferred.
