IRB Administrator - Social Behavioral/Health Services Research

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) Administrator is responsible for the efficient management of the IRB responsible for reviewing and approving research involving the participation of human subjects in social and behavioral research related to public health, including health services, quality of care, quality of life, health prevention and education, psycho-social drug abuse research, etc. The Administrator supervises an administrative team which includes a Sr. Admin. Analyst, and an Administrative Specialist. The IRB Administrator has primary responsibility for the oversight, administration, implementation, and management of all IRB business, including policies and procedures related to the protection of the rights and welfare of human subjects and the University's compliance with all federal, State and local regulations, policies and guidelines applicable to research involving human subjects in research. The Administrator is responsible for applying detailed and often times conflicting regulations, policies, and procedures in order to ensure IRB, institutional and investigator compliance as well as the protection of human subjects at UCLA. This position also assists in the education of investigators and research staff as required by the IRBs.

Required Qualifications:

Detailed knowledge of a substantial body of "regulatory" information regarding the participation of human subjects in medical or scientific research.
In-depth understanding of operational requirements related to the management and implementation of the IRB review processes.

Education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in biomedical or social/behavioral sciences or a related discipline.

Working knowledge of a significant body of scientific and medical concepts as well as terminology to properly review research proposals, request necessary additional information from researchers.

Demonstrated ability to envision and articulate future direction, to develop and enhance systems that serve as effective tools for the staff and review committees.

Ability to develop policies and procedures that are comprehensive and practical.

Must have excellent managerial skills in order to direct, guide, train and evaluate the efforts of other support staff.

Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with faculty members, committee members, IRB chairpersons, senior academic administrators and federal regulatory and funding agencies.
